The Inspiration

San+Leandro

Star & Sparrow started as a dream, inspired by a backyard garden in the San Francisco Bay Area. Bryon Kennedy and Farley Walker bought a home in the East Bay in 2009 and turned a plot of mud and concrete into an urban oasis filled with citrus, olives, berries, vegetables, flowers, and chickens. When they ran out of room, the two looked north to find a larger property to expand their efforts.

The Farm

In 2019 Bryon and Farley ended up in southwestern Washington, about 12 minutes from I-5 at Chehalis. The 45-acre lot drew them in with its peacefullness, beautiful views, and bountiful home garden.

The next steps include:

  • creating animal housing for chickens [done several times as we keep adding more birds]

  • getting bee hives [lost our hives in 2021, then caught a swarm in 2022]

  • adding ducks and geese [done, plus turkeys and quail, as of 2022]

  • adding pigs [this wasn't part of the original plan, but it happened July 2021]

  • adding sheep [done April 2022]

  • expanding vegetable production beyond the small garden [2021 not a success but 2022 was much more productive]

  • planting two apple orchards: one for cider and one to sustain heirloom varieties in danger of being lost forever [a few new apple trees will go into the ground soon]

  • expanding the wood lots of native and beneficial trees [50+ cedars planted]
